Call for entries - Erich Mendelsohn Award for Brick Architecture 2023

The Erich Mendelsohn Award is awarded jointly by the Association of German Architects (BDA) and the Building with Brick Initiative. The award is endowed with a total of 10,000 Euros and is divided into Grand Prix, the four categories of single-family house/detached house, residential construction, office/commercial buildings, public buildings/sports/leisure, and the two additional awards of refurbishment/sustainability/energy efficiency and the Newcomer Award. The awards honor special achievements in building with brick, a traditional and sustainable building material that offers endless possibilities for sustainable architectural answers to the questions of our time.

Behind the Building with Brick Initiative are 14 members whose goal is a modern and diverse perception of this traditional building material.
The prestigious Brick Architecture Award is the culmination of their joint efforts. As part of the initiative, it is of great importance to us at Deppe Backstein to award outstanding brick architecture. "Brick is one of the most sustainable building materials of all in terms of its durability and with its infinite design possibilities, and we are looking forward to the submissions in 2023," says Managing Director Dr. Dirk Deppe.

Attila Gerhäuser, Managing Director of the Building with Brick Initiative, highlights the ongoing success of the competition: "We are very pleased with the reputation of our award for brick architecture, which is already entering its sixth edition in 2023 under the new name Erich Mendelsohn Award. With this award, we are not only honoring the diversity that characterizes our building material. We are also creating an even broader public perception of brick as a building material of the future."

Projects with special facades completed after January 1, 2018 can be submitted. Entries can only be made online via the user-friendly submission portal at erich-mendelsohn-preis.com. Here, architects can easily complete all documents and information for participation step by step, save and submit them in bundled form, and pay the participation fee charged. This fee will be used exclusively for the increased administrative effort in order to maintain the quality of the external presentation of the competition at the usual high level.
